CHAPTER 16

MANY DAYS HAD PASSED since William and Alice had spent their time at the keep’s farm and in the stable. It was the day that the English were set to arrive. William had calculated their arrival based on when they were seen at the border.

He woke early that morning after sleeping little through the night. His nerves got the best of him though he knew he should have done all he could to rest. He worried for his family, his friends, and now, for Alice.

When he rose, he had as hearty of a breakfast as he could, and then he went straight to his study, where he planned to meet Donnan. They needed to review their plans for the upcoming battle.

I dinnae ken how much plannin’ we can dae when there will be so many men tae face.

William sat staring at maps of the Highlands, trying to think of the best way to position the men of his clan. He had to think of how to utilize the few men they had.

He knew he had to place his men offensively. They had to ready themselves to strike the English early on, so that the stronger men could stand by the castle and the keep, guarding all the women and children.

He had already sent word to the village that all young ones and women were to head to the keep. He needed to keep as many of them safe as he could. All able-bodied men were prepared to fight alongside their Laird.

His men believed in him, and he too had to believe in them. There was a soft patter on the steps and William looked over to find Donnan walking up and into the study. He nodded a solemn greeting, but his face held little emotion.

“Donnan, thank ye fer comin’ an’ speakin’ with me before the English arrive.” William motioned to the seat in front of him.

He felt as though he were speaking in an oddly formal manner but lately it seemed he and Donnan were in no way getting along. He knew it was because of Alice. But now, everything felt strange between him and his close friend.

“Well, we need tae get a good idea of where tae set the men. I imagine the English will be arrivin’ midday at the earliest. I dinnae think they can move much quicker than that.” Donnan spoke rapidly as he glanced at the map on the table between them.

“How have the new men been handlin’ the trainin’?” William asked. He hoped the men were doing well, but he knew those were high hopes to have, given that they had been training for only a matter of days.

“I did me best with them. But I had tae send many of them home early yesterday. I preferred them rested than tae have an extra half-day of weapons trainin’.
